Device Registration

Network Device Registration

Click here to register your network device. You must be logged in.

All Genetics network devices (computers, printers) must be registered with Computing Services before they can use the network.

Computing Services uses the network device registry to:

  • track down the sources of possible viruses and other internet attacks.
  • maximize security controls over all network assets, including our network infrastructure

LabManage Tools

Network registration is done using the Laboratory Network Management Tools (“LabManage”). These tools enable Genetics lab groups to:

  • register any new network devices (e.g., computers, printers)
  • view a list of all of a lab's devices that are registered for use on the Genetics network.
  • to add, edit, or delete entries on the list

Use and Procedures

  • Each network device should be registered when it is ready to connect to the network.
  • All new devices should be configured to use DHCP to obtain an IP address automatically. The use of fixed or static IP addresses is not allowed without permission from the network administrator.
  • Computers using the Genetics Network must meet minimum security requirements:
    • Macintosh OS X and Windows XP both have built-in firewalls that are sufficient for most users. All Windows machines must have the most recent Windows security updates, as well as up-to-date antivirus, firewall, and anti-spyware software. Windows updates and antivirus definitions must kept updated on a frequent and regular basis.
    • Spyware protection is now mandatory for all Windows computers. IN addition to installing anti-spyware software, labs may wish to consider setting up restricted user accounts. Contact Genetics Computing Services for more information.
    • Installing antivirus software for Mac OS X is optional and not recommended. All Mac OS X machines should have the latest Apple security updates using Software Update.A link to the DoIT Security Software page is provided on the device activation and registration page.
  • Each lab list is to be maintained by a pre-designated Technical Contact.
  • Labs are expected to keep their device list accurate and up-to-date.
  • Networked (IP-only) printers require the creation of a hostname and registration with the campus DNS server; normally this takes a day or two. We will send you the hostname once we have registered it with DoIT.

Registering a New Device

New devices are registered with the Network Device Registration Tool.

[Note: you will need to provide your UW NetId and password on the initial WebISO authentication page.]

WebISO

Once you are authenticated, you will be taken to the Registration Tool. You will not need to re-enter your password for the duration of your visit.

NewDevice

Using the Registration Tool, please enter the following information:

  • contact name
  • your lab
  • contact email address (this requires a WiscMail address; e.g., user@wisc.edu)
  • computer make and model
  • hardware address
  • room number
  • wall jack number

If you have a wireless card, you will have two hardware (aka, 'MAC', 'physical', 'ethernet') addresses: one for your regular network card, and one for your wireless card. Please list both hardware addresses. If you do not know how to find the MAC address for your device, please see our MAC page for information on how to do this.

After you submit the form, the reigsitration will be confirmed. At this point you can either Log Out of WebISO or return to the Device List page.

Viewing and Editing the List

To view or edit your device list, use the Lab Network Asset Management Tool:

labmanage

  • Each row displays a basic view of properties for each registered device.
  • Device details can be viewed by clicking on the Notes tab.
  • If any information is incorrect or needs to be updated, you can click the Edit link and edit the record.
  • The “X” Link is used for deleting devices that have been removed from the network.

When you are done, log out of WebISO using the link provided.
