The Genetics program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has a long history of training students at the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels. More than 500 graduate students and well over a thousand undergraduates have received degrees from the Genetics program since 1913. These students have gone on to productive careers as teachers, lawyers, scientific writers, professors, doctors, genetic counselors, academic and industrial researchers, and public servants.

Each year approximately 50 new undergraduates choose a Genetics Major at UW-Madison. Many of these students are actively involved in genetics, both in the classroom and out. UW-Madison has a strong Undergraduate Genetics Association (UGA), consisting of over 50 students. The UGA is a student-run organization that helps students learn about careers in Genetics, fosters academic excellence, and provides a social network for students interested for interested students. Many of these students also take advantage of undergraduate research opportunities, conducting independent research in one of the many labs on campus doing cutting-edge genetic investigation.
