Eudora Alternatives

[2007-11-15 11:15 AM]

Two Eudora alternatives have been announced:

Penelope/Eudora

On October 11, 2006, Qualcomm announced that development of the existing Eudora e-mail client software had ended, and that future versions of Eudora would be based on the same technology platform as Mozilla Thunderbird and be open source. The codename for this project is "Penelope."

Odysseus

Odysseus is the code name for the Eudora successor that Infinity Data Systems is working. We have always felt that Eudora was a best-of-breed email application for both platforms, Mac OS X and Windows. Easily one of the oldest email applications, it still offers features either not found in competing applications or, if found, not implemented as elegantly.

Campus Support Ending for Windows 98 and ME

[9/8/05, 11:16 AM]

The DoIT Help Desk will end support for Windows 98 and ME on June 30, 2006. This is the same day that Microsoft is ending support for these products.

We recommend that all Windows machines be running Windows XP, or at a minumum, Windows 2000.

Campus Support for Eudora Ending

[6/01/05, 11:15 AM]

Attention Eudora Users!

The campus Eudora license is set to expire on November 30, 2005 and will not be renewed. Free downloads of the software are no longer available from DoIT. Level 2 support for Eudora will continue until 11/30/2005, and basic level 1 support will continue to be provided by the Help Desk until Eudora help requests drop below 300 per year.

Fortunately, there are several very good email clients to switch over to. DoIT supports the following free clients:

We recommend Thunderbird for all Windows users, and either Apple Mail (which comes with Mac OS X) or Thunderbird for Macintosh users.

How to Switch Your Email

  • The DoIT Help Desk has developed step-by-step migration instructions to assist Eudora users who are switching to other, supported email clients.
  • An alternative is to use the freeware tool Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to import your mail from Eudora into either Apple Mail or Thunderbird.
  • DoIT also offers detailed instructions for configuring supported email clients.
